Children's author Troy Cummings visits elementary schools

Author Troy Cummings visited all five PCSD elementary schools this week. With more than 40 published books, Mr. Cummings captivated students with his creativity, humor and storytelling. Many students eagerly recognized familiar favorites such as "Can I Be Your Dog?," the "Mighty Truck" series, and the "Notebook of Doom" series.

During his visit to Sunnyside Elementary, Mr. Cummings shared insights into his writing process, demonstrated how he brings characters to life, and encouraged students to explore their own imaginations. He inspired students to take simple, everyday objects and turn them into stories just by asking questions. He emphasized that writing is a process – one that takes time, involves making mistakes, revising, and understanding that it may never feel completely perfect. His message reassured students that all writers grow through practice and perseverance.

At Hillcrest, each grade level gathered to hear Mr. Cummings read one of his books and share the experiences that inspired him to become an author. During his presentation, Cummings highlighted several of his other titles and brought his characters to life right before the students’ eyes. He sketched familiar favorites from his stories and even created brand-new characters using ideas from the audience. Students eagerly suggested personalities, settings and names, discovering first-hand how creativity and imagination spark great storytelling.

To build excitement around his visit, students even created balloon goons to go along with "The Notebook of Doom," his first book in the series, bringing the story to life in a fun and memorable way.

Thank you to Mr. Cummings, our staff who made the visits possible, and to our school PTO/PSOs for their financial support of books for the students to read before the visit.
