At PCMS we have a unique time in our schedule entitled GO Time, where the GO stands for “Growth Opportunity”. The philosophy of GO Time is as follows:
At PCMS, we believe in the growth mindset, the conviction that all people have the capacity to learn and grow through hard work and continuous deliberate practice. Therefore, we strive to provide the time, opportunities, and guidance to allow that growth to happen through the use of GO Time!
This is a half-hour block of time in our day between 4th and 5th hour that is set aside for students to participate in enrichment courses that will allow them to experience improvement in an area of high interest and/or need.
Therefore, if there are areas where a student needs improvement to be more successful in school, he or she may be asked to take a specific course that allows them to participate in guided deliberate practice in that area. Right now those courses include Focused Reading, Focused Math, and Academic Support which are all offered by invite only. However, other courses may be added throughout the year as various needs arise that students may be asked by their teachers to participate in.
If a student does not need additional practice in these areas, he/she will be able to choose what skills they would like to target for growth. There are a number of enrichment options available. All enrichment offerings fall into one of 5 categories:
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
- Visual and Performing Arts
- Wellness (Health and Fitness)
- Social Studies/Business
GO Time courses will run in 4 week sessions, so students will have the opportunity to sign up for various courses throughout the year. Our first session begins on October 1st. Students will complete an online survey which will ask them to rank their choices for the upcoming 2-3 sessions. We will then schedule them into courses based on their survey responses. Every effort will be made to honor their top choices when possible. Students will then repeat this process later in the year as new choices become available to them.
