Requirements

Who Is Eligible

Applicants must be graduating public high school students who intend to enroll in a postsecondary institution, which may be a public or nonpublic university, college, or vocational/technical college. Students who are residents of the State of Wisconsin, are in good standing, and who demonstrate probable success in postsecondary education are eligible for consideration.

Selection Criteria

This is a competitive scholarship. Students will be evaluated on their leadership, citizenship, school and community involvement, and academic achievement. In addition, students will be evaluated on their ability to clearly articulate goals in each of four areas: future educational goals, personal life goals, community/society service goals, and career goals.

Required Items in the Application Process

  • completed application
  • student essay: 300-500 words describing their goals in the following areas: 1- future education; 2- personal life; 3- community/society service; 4- career
  • three letters of recommendation (Special note--letters of rec. are not required for the first step of the Kohl Excellence Scholarship process. However, the PHS Scholarship Committee must be assured that letters can be provided on short notice. Therefore, applicants must submit the "Agreement to Write a Letter of Recommendation" form found on the attachments to this scholarship.)

Awards

The Excellence Scholarship is a one time only $1,000 award that is paid directly to the recipient's chosen college. One hundred scholarships are awarded annually.

The PHS Scholarship Committee will select three students who will move forward in the program. These nominees must pass a regional selection committee, who then forwards them to the state selection committee.
