New Look to Lunch Trays!
School meals matter! The school day just got healthier, with the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act 2010 (HHKA), and PCSD Food Service has brought some new and exciting menus to the lunch room. The new school meals focus on more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables; low-fat or non-fat milk; and less sodium and fat.
The goal of the new meals is to provide the ‘right sized’ meal based on the age group. Lunch is to provide 1/3 of a student’s daily calories. Each age group has a set calorie range this year to provide adequate calories and nutrients for each age grouping.
K-5; 550-650 calories / 6-8; 600-700 calories / 9-12; 750-850 calories.
Children have the option of choosing from the 5 components served for lunch. They can choose at least 3 components, but can choose all 5, and the lunch must include a fruit or vegetable. Lunch components include: meat or meat alternate (protein), grain/bread, fruit, vegetable, milk.
Fresh Fruit and Vegetable bars were introduced last year and are being used even more this school year! Encourage your child to check out the diverse fruit and vegetable selection we have daily at each school. Fruit and Vegetable bars are unlimited to students participating in the school lunch for the day.
Look for sample days at school, PCSD will be putting on sample days during the lunch hour to encourage students to try new items coming up on the menu.
We all have the power to encourage our children to build a healthy plate at school and home. Review the school menu with your kids and encourage them to try new foods, especially the healthy foods offered.
